EFF Condemns CISPA, Vows to Take Fight to the Senate

The House of Representatives has voted to approve the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), a bill that would allow companies to bypass all existing privacy law to spy on communications and pass sensitive user data to the government. EFF condemns the vote in the House and vows to continue the fight in the Senate.

ACTA in the EU: We Can't Call it Dead Yet

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) was dealt a major blow on April 12 when the European Parliament's rapporteur for the agreement announced that he would be recommending a "no" vote. But while the prospects of the European Parliament ratifying the agreement seems to have fortunately lessened, it does not mean that it's a fait accompli that the European Parliament will reject ACTA.

FAA Releases Lists of Drone Certificates -- Many Questions Left Unanswered

The Federal Aviation Administration has finally released its first round of records in response to EFF's Freedom of Information Act lawsuit about the agency's drone authorization program. The agency says the two lists it released include the names of all public and private entities that have applied for authorizations to fly drones domestically. These lists show for the first time who is authorized to fly drones in the United States.

Security for the 99%

In the legislative battle over cybersecurity reform, the rhetoric of fear is in full force. Fundamentally, though, the answer to securing U.S. critical infrastructure networks, corporate networks, and the Internet at large is very simple: fewer software vulnerabilities means more security.

Limbaugh Copies Michael Savage's Bogus Copyright Theory, Sends DMCA Takedown to Silence Critics

Radio host Rush Limbaugh has turned to copyright law to go after one of his most vocal critics, the left-leaning political site Daily Kos. The site's offense? Publishing a damning montage of Limbaugh's controversial comments about Sandra Fluke.

Aereo, Free Airwaves, and the Copyright Land Grab

For decades, the principle that the public airwaves are public property has been an obstacle to TV studios that want to control when, where, and how we watch their programs. But that hasn't stopped those studios from trying. The latest target is Aereo, a New York City startup that lets users stream local broadcast TV from a dime-sized antenna on a Brooklyn rooftop to their personal devices.

ISPs Ask Judge To Quash Subpoena In Troll Case -- Or Let Them Appeal

Techdirt has reported about a relatively new copyright troll tactic -- suing only Does that are unfortunate enough to be subscribers of ISPs that don't resist mass subpoenas. So we thought it was time to take note again of the ISPs that are challenging these outrageous lawsuits -- and, often, winning.

With May First/Riseup Server Seizure, FBI Overreaches Yet Again

The FBI is at it again -- executing broad search warrants, disrupting legitimate Internet traffic, and getting nothing in return. When the FBI seized a server from a colocation facility shared by May First and Riseup the actual investigative effect was zero. But more troubling is the collateral damage, as the server was used by a wide range of people who had nothing to do with the bomb threats being investigated.

CA Legislators Allow Wireless Industry to Continue "Working Day and Night" Selling You Out in Secret

EFF, along with the ACLU of Northern California, is a sponsor of the California Location Privacy Act of 2012, which would require California law enforcement officers and agencies to seek a search warrant before obtaining electronic location information. The bill has passed through the California Senate Committee on Public Safety and is now on its way to the full Senate for consideration. But when it gets there, it will be missing a major, important piece of its text: its reporting requirement.

New Wave of Facebook Phishing Attacks Targets Syrian Activists

The campaign of Internet attacks targeting Syrian opposition activists continues to intensify. Since the beginning of the year, we've documented several Trojans that covertly install spying software onto the infected computer, as well as phishing attacks which steal YouTube and Facebook login credentials.

Where old bumper cars go

Remember driving the bumper cars at amusement parks or a fair, don't you? They were so much fun.....

Well, now what do you do with old Bumper Cars? (check out the license plates!)

Yes, you read that right; these little beasties are street legal.

They run on either Kawasaki or Honda motorcycle engines and co-opt vintage bumper car bodies into the most awesome form of mini-car we've seen in too long. There are seven of these little monsters floating around California and they're all the creation of one man, Tom Wright, a builder in the outskirts of San Diego who figured the leftovers of the Long Beach Pike amusement park needed a more dignified end than the trash heap. They were originally powered by two cylinder Harley Davidson Motorcycle engines but they rattled like heck because of the two cylinder Vibration and Tom replaces them with four cylinder Honda or Kawasaki 750'sAnd a couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH, which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase. By the way, they are almost indestructible in accidents!

(And they'd also be very good on gas...

Dan)

Shell is on its way to drill the Arctic

Daniel,

Shell plans to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean this summer.

Save the Arctic. Take Action.

Take action and demand Shell stop its plans to drill in the Arctic.

Save the Arctic. Take Action.

Right this minute a global fleet of Arctic destroyers is speeding towards one of the last unspoiled places on earth.

The ships are part of oil giant Shell's mission to drill the very first wells in the pristine waters off the coast of Alaska. It's insane, but melting sea ice from global warming has made it a reality. If Shell finds oil, the Arctic oil rush will be on.

It's not over yet though. People are pushing back. Greenpeace New Zealand activists (including Xena Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless) occupied a drill ship and prevented it from leaving for the Arctic for several days. And just last week later activists occupied two icebreakers in Finland.

But to stop Shell for good, we eventually need the public support of millions around the world. Daniel, that means you.

Join the 350,000 people from around the world who have already taken action and demand Shell stop its plans to put the fragile Arctic at risk.

Widespread public opposition here in the US is going to be the key to stopping Shell. The US government is responsible for giving Shell the green light to drill. Greenpeace will be delivering these messages to the company soon. Our goal is to add the names of at least 40,000 Americans to that list before we do. Your message matters.

Shell isn't prepared for a disaster in the Arctic Ocean. No one is. The Arctic Ocean makes the Gulf of Mexico look like a flat, calm lake. With constant high seas, icebergs and massive waves, there's no way to effectively cleanup an oil spill in the Arctic Ocean. Even the head of the US Coast Guard has publicly admitted that his agency would have little chance of dealing with a spill in the frozen Arctic on their own.

The plan Shell has submitted actually includes using things like shovels and brooms to cleanup a potential spill. It would be funny if there wasn't so much at stake.

All Shell cares about is its corporate bottom line. Polar bears and unspoiled natural beauty are just obstacles to making ever greater profits. Together we can create a public obstacle Shell can't overcome — but it's going to take millions of us.

Add your voice to the growing list of people who will not stay quiet as one of the last wildernesses on earth is destroyed and help save the Arctic.

Sincerely,

Dan Howells
Greenpeace USA Deputy Campaign Director

P.S. Last year, Shell reported it had over 200 spills. It will only be a matter of time before a spill happens in the pristine polar bear habitat of the Arctic. Take action today and help save the Arctic before Shell ruins it forever.

Stop the Farm Bill giveaway to Big Ag

CREDO Action | more than a network, a movement.

We need healthy food — not five more years of giveaways to Big Ag.

Dear Daniel,

Every five years, the federal farm bill sets our nation's food policies — it's the single biggest factor in determining what ends up on your plate.

Right now Congress is only providing minimal support for healthy, local and organic foods while expanding wasteful subsidies and giveaways that support the wealthiest agribusinesses — at the expense of family farmers. This year's bill could be even worse.

The Senate Agriculture Committee just released a draft version of the 2012 Farm Bill which preserves these handouts while cutting vital conservation programs.2

We need a better Farm Bill. So we're we're standing with Environmental Working Group to stop the giveaway to Big Ag and support food and farm policies that protect our environment and expand access to healthy food.

Tell the Senate: Stop the giveaway to Big Ag. Pass a Farm Bill that supports local, healthy and organic food. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

The Farm Bill affects everything from the food you eat to conservation and nutrition programs. And right now, vital nutrition programs that help feed low-income children and decades-old conservation programs that protect wetlands, grasslands and soil health could be on the chopping block.2

Meanwhile, Big Ag is working hard to keep open the spigot that sends billions of dollars a year in subsidies to growers of commodity crops like corn, soy and cotton. More than 74 percent of that money goes to wealthy agribusinesses, not to small-scale family farmers who need them.

The bill that emerges from the Senate Agriculture Committee will likely be the best version we can hope for right now — as it will only get more unbalanced in negotiations with the House. It's vital that the committee members hear from you now.

Tell the Senate: Stop the giveaway to Big Ag. Pass a Farm Bill that supports local, healthy and organic food. Click below to automatically sign the petition:
