The summer is coming to a close, but what a summer it's been! Two of the largest U.S. cities, New York and Chicago, launched major bike sharing systems with thousands of public short-term rental bikes. Today, San Francisco opened its system, with 700 bikes and 70 stations around the Bay Area, and more on the way.

Bike sharing—particularly when paired with a network of safe, low-stress bikeways—can transform a city's bicycling experience and culture. We captured these exciting developments in the infographic below. Check it out and share with your friends!

Seriously?

The Climate Reality Project

Dear Daniel,

If a doctor said your loved one required major surgery to survive, but it would be very difficult to complete, would you take "No, it's too hard" for an answer?

We didn't think so. So when climate deniers claim, "Shifting over to clean energy would be too hard and shut down the economy," we here at The Climate Reality Project politely beg to differ.

Maybe you do too.

We put a man on the moon. We eradicated smallpox. We built a computer that can fit in your pocket. These accomplishments -- and so many more -- were possible because groups of like-minded, passionate individuals (much like you) saw the future they wanted and worked hard to make it happen.

Big Oil and Big Coal spread big lies claiming that changing to clean energy would cause economic turmoil and finding sustainable solutions to the climate crisis "is too hard."

But that's just not the case. We're already seeing that shifting to clean energy is a whole lot easier than they think. In 2012, renewables accounted for slightly over half of new electric generating capacity worldwide. In the U.S, we're installing a new solar power system every four minutes. Meanwhile, global investment in clean energy topped out at $244 billion worldwide. In 2009, global investment was just $178 billion -- so in just three years that's a 37 percent climb, and nearly ten times the investment made in 2004.

As we reach the end of August, we need your help to keep the pressure on climate deniers by using Reality Drop. We're less than 1,000 away from our end-of-month goal of sharing the truth 50,000 times on key articles across the net.

We know the transition to clean energy won't happen overnight. But it will happen and you can bet it will be sooner rather than later.

With your help, we can get there. Thank you for all your hard work,

The Climate Reality Team

P.S. Help us share the truth about climate change 50,000 times on RealityDrop.org and change the climate conversation today. Don't forget to use the #HeatOnDenial hash tag on Twitter!

1 million vs. fracking on public lands

Subject: 1 million vs. fracking on public lands

Friends,

Last Friday, we blew our own expectations out of the water.

Organizations from across the country submitted over 1 million comments to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the agency that controls US federal lands, to say no to a new proposal to expand fracking on our public land.

This amazing response from activists from all over the country sends a loud and clear message to the BLM and the Obama administration that we will not stand for any more fracking on our lands -- we want renewable energy, and we want it right away.

Last Thursday, with our friends at Americans Against Fracking, a coalition of organizations focused on banning fracking, we delivered over 650,000 of those comments to the BLM. 350's Policy Director Jason Kowalski stood with organizations big and small who want to ban fracking, from the frontlines in Pennsylvania, to many of the national organizations tackling the issue.

Fracking threatens our climate, water and health. Time and time again we've seen fracking wells crack and water contaminated. Methane gas is one of the most potent greenhouse gases and fracking leaks a ton of it into our atmosphere. What's not leaked is burned and turned into CO2, which we already have far too much of anyways.

But together, we're showing that our movement is ready to step up to do big things to stop fracking. And that's huge.

Thank you for standing 1 million strong against fracking,

Linda

P.S. Plans are also coming together nicely for this Draw the Line on Keystone XL day of action. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, the actions that are planned are really impressive: act.350.org/event/draw_the_line/search/

MOVE TO AMEND IS GOING BACK TO SCHOOL

Daniel --

These days, Americans are suffering through an onslaught of corporate advertising for clothing, supplies, and gadgetry for students heading back to school. Besides these expenses, parents are budgeting for increasing school fees no longer covered by their tax dollars. For those with college age students, many budgets are being stretched too thin to help cover rising tuition rates, textbooks, and housing.

This month, Move to Amend Reports has been focusing on "Back to School," and the American education system on our weekly internet radio program, Move to Amend Reports.

  • On August 23, we spoke with Roshan Bliss, a student organizer, inclusiveness and anti-oppression trainer, and group process specialist with a passion for empowering young people to defend their futures and democratize their campuses.

The corporate takeover of our public schools is happening: In leadership, curriculum and testing, and the assault on teachers and their unions.

We could resolve the issues in public education if we were more concerned about the quality of an education rather than ensuring profitability for corporate America. Money is not speech, and corporations are not people. But every child is a very important person, who deserves the best education we can deliver.

Ask the teachers and educators you know to sign the Motion to Amend petition and share it with their colleagues.

Tune into Move to Amend Reports tonight for more of our continuing series on "Back to School."

Sincerely,

Ashley Sanders, Daniel Lee, David Cobb, Egberto Willies, George Friday, Jerome Scott, Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, Laura Bonham, Maria Agosto, Nancy Price, Pamela Brown, Richard Monje
