Tell your senator: protect privacy in social media

Dear Daniel,

More than half of all American adults have a Facebook account. Each day, these Americans express their own personal views on matters political and social. Now, some businesses are trying to penetrate these private sites for their own purposes.

Tell your state senator: No one should be forced to turn over their social media passwords as part of a job interview.

Recent public reports reveal the breadth of this disturbing trend. A number of entities - public and private - have begun asking applicants for their user names and passwords on social network sites, so that the potential employer can "review" the profile as part of the application process. Social media sites like Facebook offer levels of security, so that one can decide what to share with the broader world. This practice obliterates those privacy protections. Talk about an intrusion. This is like an employer asking for your credit card bills and access to your bank account to see how you spend your own money.

The Illinois House recently approved - by a wide margin - House Bill 3782, which bars prospective employers from engaging in this practice. This is common sense. Urge your state senator to support House Bill 3782 when it is considered in the Illinois Senate.

Sincerely,

Mary Dixon
