| Greetings, Last week we wrote to tell you about the latest victory for communities nationwide when the FCC voted to clear a backlog of over six thousand pending applications for FM translators and released a set of proposed rules for new community radio stations, asking for public comment on the proposals. That release begins the final rulemaking procedure and the FCC will begin accepting applications for new Low Power FM (LPFM) stations nationwide as early as this September. Recently volunteers and staff called the more than 1,200 people who expressed an interest in starting a radio station. The calls made for an inspiring two weeks in which we heard about plans for community radio from groups passionate about their communities and the possibility of having their voices and perspectives on the air. Over the next several weeks we will share some of their plans through profiles of potential applicants. We hope you too will be inspired and that you will support our work to get these groups on the air. The future of community radio is upon us. How will you help shape it? Inside this issue: FCC Breaks More Ground  FCC Update: New rules and proposals to expand community radio On March 19, we celebrated celebrated a policy victory when the FCC took two major actions to expand community radio. First, the agency announced rules to deal with a backlog of pending applications for translators (which repeat the signals of other stations). After nine years, the FCC is dismissing thousands of these applications to clear the airwaves for community radio! Second, the FCC released proposed rules for future Low Power FM (LPFM) stations, asking the public to comment on the proposals. With the smart phone becoming more accessible, mobile applications have the potential to expand the reach of your radio station or program by bringing the latest news and music to listeners via a variety of different technologies. Its important to consider branching out into mobile technologies since more and more people are using their mobile device as their primary source of internet access, especially in places where access to broadband is limited. Additionally, for citizen journalists reporting from live events, mobile audio apps can turn any smart phone into a mini-production center. Read more . . . Prometheus' outreach coalition consists of over a hundred groups and individuals getting the word out nationwide, but we need your help! The work we do over the next several months will reap tangible rewards for the next 10, 20, 30 years and more – that's why so many people are tuning in.
