Corporate America Responsible for Trayvon Miller's Murder

Daniel,

If anyone has any doubts about corporate America running amok, then they need look no further than the malicious shooting of Trayvon Martin, the African American teenager who was shot dead on the streets — legally.

Suzanne Merkelson exposes the corporate connection in this article. It seems the Florida law that created legal murder is a brainchild of ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, an outfit of corporations and Republican state legislators who concoct these crazy laws and then pass them onto an unwitting public.

Couple that with the rampant racism and hate-mongering of corporate media like Fox "News" and we have a recipe for tragedy.

That ALEC exists at all is a sad comment on the state of our government, and that they get away with interfering in the legislative process is a crime in and of itself.

It is a good thing that Move To Amend exists because we have the solution to this dilemma — end corporate personhood and declare that money is not speech.

All over the country,
Americans are coming together in efforts to pass resolutions and ballot initiatives, which say exactly that. Our goal by the end of the year is to pass 50 initiatives in cities, towns and states in order to create a grassroots groundswell to amend the Constitution.

Will you help us put ALEC in their place?

It's not as hard as you think. Local volunteers are organizing and have already passed dozens of resolutions; find the tools and resources you need to be successful in the
Get Involved section of our website.

We cannot sit idly by while corporate America is gunning to bring down our democracy, to silence our voices, and while they are now responsible for murdering citizens in the streets.

In solidarity,

Tax Super PACs at 99%

Dear Daniel,

Across the political spectrum, Americans agree that the Citizens United decision, allowing unlimited corporate spending on elections, has been a disaster – and that the Super PACs doing most of that spending should be banned. The Super PAC-funded attack ads dominating the Republican primaries have become national jokes.

Tell Congress and your state legislators to tax Super PACs at 99%.

The Supreme Court maintains that corporations have the "human" right to "speak" by buying our elections. Until the Supreme Court changes its mind or we amend the Constitution, we would seem to be at an impasse.

But there is an immediate fix that RootsAction learned of from our friends at BradBlog. Congress or our states could tax Super PAC donations heavily. When this country was in deep depression in the 1930s, President Roosevelt proposed taxing income above a high level at 100%, and achieved 94%. We propose taxing donations to Super PACs by as much as 99% – in the name of the 99% of us lacking voices in pay-to-play politics.

It can't violate corporations' "human rights" to tax them. We humans are taxed all the time.

Tax Super PAC donations at 99% starting now.

Please forward this email widely to like-minded friends.

Onward,

Obama's Big Move on Climate

Sierra Club - Explore, enjoy and protect the planet

Dear Daniel,

Take Action!

Take Action

Yesterday, President Obama's EPA made history on climate by proposing federal limits on carbon pollution for power plants -- pollution that is linked to climate disruption.

We've already collected 32,000 messages in support of a powerful new carbon pollution safeguard -- help us reach 100,000!

Tell the EPA that we support strong industrial carbon pollution safeguards to fight climate disruption!

We all know the devastation of 2011's record breaking extreme weather events -- from Texas' worst wildfire season in history to a terrible string of deadly tornadoes in the Midwest.1 As the Earth warms, severe weather events are becoming our new normal.2

Yet even as the EPA moves forward, corporate polluters like the infamous Koch Brothers align against us.

Let's push back against the polluter agenda by sending hundreds of thousands of messages to the EPA in support of strong industrial carbon pollution protections!

We can't take this climate victory for granted. The Koch Brothers have been quietly using their billions for years to undermine efforts to address carbon pollution and climate disruption -- all so they can continue raking in record profits and spew unchecked pollution into our air.

Just recently, we learned that one Koch funded organization, the Heartland Institute, is even going so far as to push a curriculum based on climate denial nonsense in our schools.3

Koch can't buy the truth. When we're united, we're a more powerful force than all the corporate polluters and their money. We beat them last year on major life-saving mercury protections -- and we'll do it again and again until we get climate pollution under control. We'll challenge them at every level -- in the media, in our communities, and in the halls of government. Together, we can create a future that is cleaner and healthier for everyone.

Join me in ensuring the EPA fights climate disruption and protects our families from industrial carbon pollution from coal and other power plants.

The stakes are high -- whether you are concerned about rising sea levels in Brooklyn, water supplies in California, or more severe storms in the Midwest, there is no doubt that our way of life is at risk.

But there is hope. Together, we can take on Big Coal. With strong carbon pollution protections, we can move off of outdated and dirty coal-fired power plants. Our country has 21st century clean energy technologies. It's time to use them.

It's time for a change: let the EPA know Americans stand behind strong industrial climate pollution protections!

Thanks for all you do to protect our environment!

The 99% Spring is coming.

Groups from every corner of our movement — inspired by the everyday heroes of Occupy Wall Street and Madison, Wisconsin — are planning a massive campaign of bold nonviolent direct actions to make the voices of the 99% impossible to ignore.

The key is making the 99% Spring as big as possible. That's why during the week of April 9-15, in small towns and big cities all across America, 100,000 people will come together for an unprecedented national movement-wide nonviolent direct action training. We'll learn to tell the story of our economy and what went wrong, we'll learn the history of nonviolent direct action, and we'll learn how we can take action and create great change in this country.

Will you join the 99% Spring? Click here to find the event closest to you.

USAction affiliates in ME, WA, WV, and NY will work with local organizations and volunteers to run more than 750 trainings in living rooms, union halls, churches, and community centers nationwide. All we need now is to get as many people as possible to join in - people like YOU.

Our nation's greatest advances happen when we stand up and take courageous, visionary direct action – from the struggle to secure the vote for women to the strikes that built power for workers to the civil rights movement.

Now we need to create that kind of change again in America.

Last year, from Madison, Wisconsin to Occupy Wall Street, we saw a new movement using direct action to highlight the shattered and shrinking middle class.

The 99% Spring is our chance to maintain and broaden that energy, and learn how we can take action to challenge corporate power, end tax giveaways to the 1%, fight the influence of money in politics, and create an economy that works for all of us.

Our movement is growing, and this is a chance for all of us to come together to shift the political landscape in America. Will you join in?

Thank you for all you do to make this movement real.

Sincerely,
David Elliot

Universal Healthcare Without Individual Mandate

Dear Daniel,

If the U.S. Supreme Court rejects the individual mandate for healthcare this summer (and even if it doesn't), we should be aware that this was never a real solution and that something better is available.  We should make Congress and our state legislatures aware now.

Tell them single-payer healthcare is the way.

Most rich countries spend much less on healthcare and provide it for everyone without mandating the purchase of health insurance from private corporations.  They use non-profit systems like single-payer that cut out the middleman, the bureaucracy, the advertising, and the profit motive.

Congress has the Constitutional right to pass laws "necessary and proper for carrying into execution" its powers, including providing for the "general welfare."  Medicare and veterans' healthcare are single-payer systems that could easily be expanded to include everyone.  It is arguably not "necessary and proper" to require people to buy an expensive, inadequate product from a private corporation.

If the individual mandate ends, let's not lose heart.  Let's seize the opportunity. States are moving ahead with single-payer, but Obama's healthcare law included measures aimed at making it harder for states to act.  Vermont has passed single-payer and is struggling with these hurdles now.

An amendment to fix this was passed in House committee during the 2009 healthcare debate but then unceremoniously stripped out by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Tell Congress to allow states to create single-payer now.

Please forward this email widely to like-minded friends.
