Dear Daniel Stafford, Tell your senators and representative to support the Production Tax Credit for renewable energy » Join us to receive the Green American & support our green economy work » A major driver of the growth of wind power in the US is in trouble. The Production Tax Credit (PTC), which provides a 2.2-cent per kilowatt hour tax credit for qualifying renewable energy projects, is set to expire at the end of 2013 -- unless it is renewed by Congress.   At the end of 2012, Congress almost let the PTC expire before extending it for just one year as part of the "fiscal cliff" negotiations. But last-minute saves and short-term extensions are ineffective in boosting clean energy. Wind farms require 18 to 24 months for project planning, and North American Wind Power reports that last year's delay and brief extension resulted in only 1.6 MW of wind power installed in the first six months of 2013 - the capacity equivalent of one turbine. That's why this year we're asking you to join us in demanding that Congress implement a meaningful extension of the Production Tax Credit -- for ten years or more.  Keeping the PTC in place will protect American wind installation and manufacturing jobs, keep the US competitive in the worldwide clean energy market, reducing US greenhouse gas emissions, and prevent air and water pollution from coal and natural gas.
