Act now: Tell your state senators to support the regulation of surveillance drones in Illinois!

Dear Daniel,

Powerful and invasive surveillance technology is now being attached to drones – unmanned aerial vehicles – for use by domestic law enforcement. While none are currently being used in Illinois, at least two local sheriffs – in Cook and Champaign Counties – have explored deploying drones in their communities. Now is the time to put regulations in place before the technology is widely used.

Take action: tell your state senators to support drone regulation.

The Illinois Freedom from Drone Surveillance Act – Senate Bill 1587 – is designed to place modest guidelines on the use of this powerful technology. The bill, for example, would bar the arming of drones, except in certain emergencies. The bill also would curb how much information could be gathered by drones and require annual reporting to the public about the use of drones in Illinois.

States across the nation are seeking similar legislation to place some limits on the use of this technology – first created and perfected for use on a battlefield. It is time for Illinois to act, before our skies are filled with drones.

Sincerely,

Ed Yohnka
