Message From Senator Durbin

Dear Mr. Stafford:

Thank you for contacting me about renewable energy tax credits in the Expiring Provisions Improvement, Reform, and Efficiency (EXPIRE) Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

Several tax deductions expired on December 31, 2013. The Expiring Provisions Improvement Reform and Efficiency Act (EXPIRE Act) would extend many of the tax deductions that expired on December 31, 2013, through the end of 2015. The EXPIRE Act would extend tax credits for producing electricity using wind, biomass, geothermal, landfill gas, trash, and hydropower.

The EXPIRE Act was reported out of the Senate Finance Committee on April 3, 2014 and should be considered by the full Senate sometime this year.

I support renewal of tax credits to produce electricity from wind, biomass, geothermal energy, solar energy, irrigation power, landfill gas, and trash combustion. An extension of the federal production tax credit could be valuable for many companies working to reduce our nation's dependence on fossil fuels.

To secure our energy future, we must encourage investment in domestic energy development that will protect our environment, strengthen our national security, and create good jobs here at home. Extending these energy tax credits will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move America toward energy independence.

I will keep your support of these credits in mind as the EXPIRE Act is discussed in the Senate.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please feel free to keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator
