Mr. Daniel Stafford
40 N Tower Rd Apt 9N
Oak Brook, IL 60523-1120
Dear Mr. Stafford:
Thank you for contacting me about the Centennial of the National Park Service (NPS). I appreciate hearing from you.
In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Park Service Organic Act into law creating the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. 2016 will mark the 100th anniversary of the NPS.
I share your views about the importance of supporting the NPS. More than 84 million acres of land is under the purview of the NPS, including many diverse and historic areas. The work of the NPS includes preservation and conservation projects, as well as park maintenance, support, and management.
Our nation's parks provide important access to green space and recreational opportunities for families and protect habitats for wildlife. Park rangers and other park staff play a particularly important role in ensuring the public has the opportunity to enjoy all that the parks have to offer.
I will keep your thoughts in mind as this issue is further considered by the Senate. Thank you again for contacting me. Please feel free to keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator
RJD/kl
