Help prevent bullying in Illinois schools: tell your senator to support House Bill 5290!

Dear ACLU Supporter,

In an age of deep partisan divisions and little political consensus - here is something that we all can agree on: students should feel safe and secure while at school. Still, more than one in three Illinois students report they feel "unsafe" in their own school.

This fear is based on sometimes vicious harassment and bullying resulting from a student's personal characteristics, physical appearance or sexual orientation. More than half of all students report being verbally hassled and nearly a quarter say they have been physically harassed. Currently, reports of bullying may fall through the cracks because some districts lack a clear process for responding to them. Help ensure that school is a place of learning and growing, not fear and intimidation.

House Bill 5290 (Senate Amendment 1) is a step in the right direction. School districts already are required by state law to have an anti-bullying policy. This proposal defines "policy on bullying" to provide schools with the guidance needed to comply with existing law. It simply asks schools to communicate to their community what they will do to investigate and address reports of bullying. Tell your state senator to stand up for students and support House Bill 5290.

We need to ensure that school is a place of learning and growing, not fear and intimidation. Let's put a stop to bullying in Illinois schools!

Sincerely,

Mary Dixon
