Over the past thirty years, Republicans in Congress have been hailing the virtues of a free market system.  In a free market society, an educated consumer and an honest producer can freely negotiate the price of a particular item, using the principals of supply and demand.  So, it surprised me when House Republicans voted to make us all a little less informed on our options for private health insurance.

The Health Benefits Exchange is an online hub for consumers and members of Congress to shop between privately held insurers.  As consumers both you and your Congressman can compare the prices and benefits between Blue Cross & Blue Shield, AETNA, and other major private health care providers.  In Massachusetts, they call it the Health Connector.

Yet, Congressional Republicans seem to have an issue with making information easily accessible.  So much so that they even reversed their position on a process called reconciliation to make this happen.  House Resolution 648, which passed last Thursday, would bypass the normal procedural rules and deny debate on defunding the Health Benefits Exchange created under the reform act.

There is nothing wrong with making sure consumers are well informed over products they purchase, especially something as critical as health insurance.  This is just another tactic designed to put politics before anything else and, sadly, my opponent voted for it.

We need a new representative in the 14th district, someone who isn't afraid to allow healthcare consumers to educate themselves and someone who will put people first.

Sincerely,
Dennis Anderson
Democratic Candidate - 14th Congressional District
