Dear Daniel, Good news! Moments ago the House Appropriations Committee dropped plans to block the Federal Communications Commission from requiring that broadcasters post their political ad spending records online. After hearing from nearly 65,000 people like you, the House leadership decided that it's a political liability to oppose transparency. You have yourself to thank for this win. Once again we have shown that we can face down corporate lobbyists in Washington by speaking out in large numbers. That said, the threat to this hard-won reform is not over. The National Association of Broadcasters has rallied its army of lawyers to challenge the FCC decision in court. (We'll send you more information about this in a future email.) For now, please accept the gratitude of the Free Press Action Fund. Voters deserve to know who is trying to influence their choice on Election Day, and the FCC's online political file rule will shine a brighter light on that process. Thanks, Tim, Candace, Libby and the rest of the Free Press Action Fund team P.S. April's FCC decision was a milestone in the fight for accountable media. We defied every ounce of conventional wisdom in Washington by proving that activists, consumer advocates, bloggers and everyday people can join forces with Free Press to defeat a corporate agenda. Help us protect that victory. Contribute to the Free Press Action Fund now. Thank you! |
